Sept. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- THE academic and cultural relationship between India and the UK needs to be a two- way process, said Ruth Gee, regional director, British Council, India and Sri Lanka.

She was speaking in the Capital at the British Council recently at a talk titled, ‘ Enhancing UK to India Student Mobility,’ a cultural event by British students undertaking study and fellowship programmes in the country.

“ With 40,000 Indian students in the UK, we want to get UK students back to India,” said Gee. “ The importance of India on the world stage is rapidly increasing and one cannot imagine an educated citizen not having enough knowledge of India,” she said. The objective should be to strengthen the bond between the two countries in the fields of education, arts, climate change and sports.

The event saw Louisa Rowen, a graduate in ancient history from the University of Birmingham who is on a study visit to India under the ‘ Study India Programme’ ( SIP) sharing her experience of working in a hospital.

“ My experience of working in a hospital with little medical knowledge was quite challenging,” said Rowen. But the highlight of her stint was watching a game of basketball by a group of wheelchairbound participants.

“ We started our programme by discussing, our concerns and fears about Delhi belly and the dreaded malaria,” said Rowen. “ But then India is all about seeing the good within the bad,” she added sagely.

Under SIP, a total of 400 British students from the UK visit India over a period of two years. “ The programme has really inspired me to broaden my horizons in terms of learning and travelling,” said Mark MacMillan, a student from the first batch, when the programme was started in 2009.

Under the Global Fellowship Programme, 30 British students who have completed school education visit in India for six weeks with the aim of developing global understanding, talent and enterprise to engage effectively with the culture and business environment of the country.
