Follow on Google News | ![]() A Killer New Comedy--"Character Assassins"--at NJ Rep Thru Oct 31In Character Assassins, Charlie Schulman's dark and delightfully mind-bending new comedy, a playwright and a theater critic are locked in a mortal battle of wits and aspirations over power, prestige, art, and of course, the girl.
Not long ago Jonathan Burns was the toast of Broadway. Now he's just toast. The young playwright once touted as the next Arthur Miller has broken into the apartment of Simon Frank, head theater critic of the Times, with a mask, a gun and a derivative barrage of epithets with which to threaten the life of the man he blames for inciting his fall from grace. When the police fail to respond to Simon's 911 calls and Jonathan fails to uphold his resolve or his anonymity, the two hatch a plan devised to redeem and enrich them both. With nods and winks galore to the art of the thriller and the thrill of art, CHARACTER ASSASSINS ingeniously and hilariously leads a herd of cultural sacred cows to the slaughter as it celebrates the mysteries that keep theater alive and kicking. Directed by Dana Benningfield, CHARACTER ASSASSINS stars Warren Kelley as Simon Frank, and Brad Fraizer as Jonathan Burns. Scenic design is by Jessica L.
