Barbara L. Oliver, Chair, MED Week 2010 and Deputy Director of OEO, City of Philadelphia Department of Commerce, announced today that they will sponsor its 26th Annual MED (Minority Enterprise Development) Week Celebration on Thursday and Friday, October 7-8, 2010.
MED Week has been observed on a National level by Presidential Proclamation since 1983. Its purpose is to promote and recognize the achievements of minority owned businesses. This year’s theme is “A New Economic Reality For A New Decade”. This year’s awardees include: Richard Cottom, Sovereign Security, LLC; Norma Romero-Mitchell, Benefits Plus Consulting Group; James Brown, LeCheveu Hair Salon; Sheandelle Johnson, SIJ Hauling, Inc.; Bianca Hart, Hart Enterprises & Associates; Ahmeenah Young, Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority; Stephan R. Reeves, Montage Companies; Louis Rodriquez, Rodriquez Consulting LLC; Dorothy Alexander, Versie Total Office Solution; Noel Lowe, FutureNet, Inc.; Donna Allie, Team Clean, Inc.; Michael Sands, Natural Pest Control Company; Karim Purdie, Apex Electrical Services, Inc.; Nehemiah Davis, Ndent Worldwide Group, LLC; Angela Zippi, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority; Wayne O. The Conference will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 1101 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA. This year’s celebration will include one full day of workshops on the following topics: emerging opportunities; accessing capital; social media; completing the bid process with the School District; business development; establishing and developing business relationships. All workshop sessions are free and open to the public; the sessions begin at 9 a.m.

The MED Week celebration was started locally in Philadelphia in 1984 to honor and promote minority owned businesses in the Philadelphia area. The organizers of the first Med Week activities were Barbara Daniel Cox, former Director of Mayor Wilson Goode's Womens Commission and Bilal Abdul Qayyum, Assistant to the Deputy Director of the City Commerce Department. Each year since the first celebration, the MED Week Celebration has grown to a full week of successful workshops and award luncheons with an ever growing number of sponsors to promote the great accomplishments of minority owned businesses. The Philadelphia MED Week Committee consists of corporations, local colleges and universities, local and regional government agencies and minority business owners that are committed to supporting opportunities for minority businesses.
