TransActive Founder Receives 2010 Equality Champion Award

Sept. 24, 2010 - PRLog -- Each year, Basic Rights Oregon honors  community leaders who devote their passion and energy to work for LGBT equality. We are excited to announce that Jenn Burleton is a recipient of their 2010 Equality Champion award.

As the Founder and Executive Director of TransActive Education & Advocacy (TransActive), Jenn has been instrumental in providing education, raising awareness and establishing services to families of transgender and gender non-conforming children and youth in Oregon, the United States and elsewhere around the world.

Based in Portland, TransActive is one of the only non-profit organizations offering in-house, low cost counseling, case management, community education, advocacy and research services to these families, children and youth. Their 4-step "Running the RACE" Standard of Care model offers families, schools, social service agencies, health care providers and others a comprehensive, proactive and child-centered path to better outcomes for transgender children and youth.

It is estimated that 1:100 children is transgender, with many more falling somewhere in the gender non-conforming range of identity and expression. There are, in fact, more transgender children than there are children with Type 1 diabetes (1:400).

The Annual Dinner & Auction is Basic Rights Oregon’s  largest “don’t-miss” event of the year! During the program, they highlight BRO’s yearly accomplishments and recognize community leaders and activists who’ve gone to extraordinary lengths to further equality in Oregon. The evening includes a cocktail hour with a silent auction, formal dinner, live auction, awards ceremony and exciting entertainment!
