Oct. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- As opposed to the Nursing field of 18%. Here in Virginia there has been a market saturation of Nursing students going to 2 year colleges and thinking that they will DEFINITELY  have a job when they get out.

Unfortunately, I can name 25 students that I know personally that  have completed their education in Nursing and are looking for a job 6 months later. Do you want to be one of them?

Most of the articles you read say that the Medical Administration field will be replaced by a computer very soon. I give you a personal example: I accidentally cut my hand and had to go to the ER to get sutures and have them taken out 10 days later. When I had to have them removed, I only was seen by the MA, a CNP, and the Medical Office Specialist. I never saw a nurse or a medical doctor.

I know so of you are “still on the fence” about this so let me give you 10 proven reasons to choose this field.
   1.  Work from home= the going trend now is to have these individuals work from home to add physical space for more possible rooms in the hospitals.
   2.  You will have the ability to start your own business with very low overhead. You can start a consulting business or be a “road-warrior” coder.
   3. There are a number of online schools that offer this program.
   4.  Some of these schools have programs that are as short as 2 to 3 months. Personally, I would not recommend that. There is a great deal of information that you have to master to be in this field and I feel that that is not enough time to master it all.
   5. As a Medical Biller or Coder, you will be highly respected in your workplace.
   6. This field is an excellent choice for individuals that have disabilities. You can be in a wheelchair and still do your job. You can not say that about a Nurse now can you.
   7. Coders are in a high demand and will remain that way.
   8. You can work and still be home with your kids when you need to be.
   9. You can set your own hours. Lets say that you are not a 9 to 5 type personality. That would not be a problem in this field. You can work from 12-8am, if you so choose. And yes, there are hospitals that specifically hire their Coders at those hours because the hospital is normally quieter and less activity. Originally, all hospitals used those hours and so the Coders were referred to as “vampires” because they never saw sunlight and tended to be pale.
   10. The last reason is that you can set your own hours. Let’s say that you are have surgery and really can not work Thursday and Friday. With this you can always make up the time on Saturday and Sunday. With the average job, you do not have that luxury. You just are going to be short on your paycheck for 2 days.

Finally, if you are thinking about Medical Assisting or Medical Billing and Coding. The average beginning pay in Virginia for a Medical Assistant(right out of school) is $9.00 per hour. The beginning pay for a Medical Biller or Coder is $18.00 per hour and $23.00 with certification.
