Follow on Google News | Celebrity Anglers compete at St. Katharine Docks Urban Fishing Match 29.10.10Six world renowned anglers will be pitted against one another on Friday 29th October in the first annual Urban Fishing Match at St. Katharine Docks, next to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.
On Friday 29th October, St. Katharine Docks will play host to the first annual Urban Fishing Match, involving six world renowned professional anglers, including popular female Angler Wendy Lythgoe – Clark, and top sportsman, Steve Ringer. It’s very unusual that St. Katharine Docks will grant anyone a fishing licence, as they are fiercely protective of the welfare of the wildlife on the Estate, however, on this occasion they will be granting access to some of the best players in the UK’s largest sport. The Docks contains some excellent specimens of carp, perch, bream and pike, and reportedly has some possible record sized fresh water fish. The rules of the match state that all fish must be returned to the water, and no harmful methods may be used. Situated right next to Tower Bridge and The Tower of London, in the very heart of the City of London, it’s the last place you’d expect to see this typically rural sport enjoyed – but fishing really is an accessible and popular sport so that’s exactly what they’re setting out to prove! Ali Hamidi will be presenting the event for Tight Lines on Sky Sports, and members of the public – young and old - will be welcomed onto the special floating platform to join some of the Anglers, where they will be free to ask questions, and get some hands on experience. This is a perfect way to introduce your kids to a popular sport, a chance to appear on TV, and something a little different to do during half term. Ali Hamidi is a familiar face on Sky Sports Tight Lines, as well as representing UK angling equipment manufacturer Korda. He’s a carp specialist, running Korda’s Carp Academy, and at just 31 has had a successful career in television before moving into Angling – an area about which he’s been passionate for all of his life. The St. Katharine Docks Urban Fishing Match starts at 11am, and finishes with a prize giving at 3:30pm. Tight Lines will be broadcast on Sky Sports on 11th November 2010. The Competitors Wendy Lythgoe-Clark Wendy is a former member of the England Ladies team, who has been fishing since the tender age of three – often as the only female on the bank. Wendy has competed in nine World Championships, and has 5 World Championship team gold medals to her name. Steve Ringer Steve is recognised as the one of the sport’s top Anglers and anyone who knows anything about fishing knows of Steve! He’s a professional Angler and has won a large number of competitions, including two coarse fishing events that each presented a prize of £25,000. He’s considered one of the UK’s most talented in his field, and well known for his understanding of tactics and bait. Mick Bull Mick is the winner of the 2008 highly regarded Fish O’Mania competition, which offers prize money to the tune of £25,000. He’s one of the top Anglers in the Midlands region. At the age of 41, he’s been fishing for over thirty years, and is the proud father of an eight year old son. Tony Curd Young gun Tony is just 20 years old and hails from Notting Hill in London. He’s already won a number of titles and great things are expected from him in the sport. Lewis Murawski Lewis is the winner of the prestigious Milo Angling Festival at White Acres in Newquay. He’s a regular winner of matches, not just in his local area of Norwich, but around the UK. He’s the owner of two fishing tackle shops and is an expert in this area.
