Nov. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- New Year’s is looming and resolutions once again come to the forefront of our mind. Lose weight. Travel More. Eat Healthier. Write a book. Surveyed results show that 81% of the population desires to write a book at some point in their lifetime.

Over 170,000 titles are published each year in the United States alone. These numbers have been increasingly on the rise due to the ease and ability for authors to self-publish through less traditional standards.

“Self-publishing is becoming one of the fastest and most convenient ways for authors to get their books out into the world,” says Lisa Shultz who wrote and self-published two books in 2010 with her business partner Andrea Costantine.

In the most recent years traditional publishing has changed dramatically. Agents and publishers are taking on fewer authors, sending more authors to utilize the route of self-publishing. Self-publishing authors retain all of the rights to their work and remain in creative control, which is becoming more desirable with many of today’s authors. Additionally, with the internet and social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and YouTube, new authors can successfully create a following for their work and market their books without the distribution of a publishing house.

Print-on-demand services are also seeing an increase. These services offer an option for the author in which they can choose to print only copies purchased and can re-order at any given time without needing to order 500 to 1000 books to save on printing costs.

“Getting started and writing the book turns out to be the hardest part for many aspiring authors. We believe the first book is the hardest. Just get that first one done and you’ll be able to quickly start churning out more books,” says Andrea Costantine. “If writing a book is really on the top of your list of things to do in your lifetime, there’s no better time in history than right now to write that book.”

There are many resources and sources of information available online regarding writing and publishing, so the question remains, if you are one of the 81% of the population who says they want to write a book, will you finally make it happen this year?
