Tuta absoluta pheromones for central Asian research groups

Nov. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Due to the seriousness of this pest and its impact on the future of Tomato production in central Asia, Russell IPM Ltd is offering free pheromone detection kits to Universities and Agricultural research centers to assist in the early recording of this pest in any of these countries and to encourage drawing up an early plans for the management of this new invasive pest.

Eligible research groups from Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan may request there free kits directly from Dr Shakir Al-Zaidi, Russell IPM Ltd,

After expanding form Spain, Tuta absoluta have completed its establishment in all Mediterranean countries and started marching toward the east. The shores of Caspian Sea with its mild weather will provide the insect with the convenient corridor for such expansion.  In 2009, Iran produced 5M tons of tomato while the other central Asian countries combined produced just less than 5M ton.

Tuta absoluta is a serious and invasive pest for Tomato. After devastating tomato production in South America, it was introduced accidently to Spain in 2006. Since then it has spread rapidly to main tomato production in Spain and the rest of the Mediterranean countries.

The problems associated with this pest beside its population rapid growth and spread, its ability to develop insecticide resistant strains within few generations.
