Nov. 24, 2010 - PRLog -- GVK Group is going to bid to build Mumbai’s second airport. Currently, Mumbai City is served by its airport known as the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. It is the primary airport in Mumbai, India, and is South Asia's busiest airport in term of passenger traffic.

GVK Power & Infrastructure Ltd. said its venture running Mumbai’s airport will bid to administer a planned second airfield in India’s financial capital as financial growth indicates at increased travel demand. “We are certainly going to bid,” said A. Issac George, the chief financial officer of GVK Power.

Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. (controlled by billionaire Anil Dhirubhai Ambani), stated it may also compete for the 74 percent stake that the government is offering in the planned 150 billion-rupee ($3.3 billion) airport in eastern suburb of Navi Mumbai. This does not atop GVK from aiming at expanding the current airport to keep up with the increased travel demands from an economy that is growing more than 8 percent a year.

“GVK will definitely make a very strong bid for the project,” said Mr. Kapil Kaul, chief executive officer of Center for Asia Pacific Aviation’s Indian unit. “They wouldn’t want any competition in running airports in Mumbai.” The new airport is expected to have a 10 million passengers’ capacity. This will be possible when the first phase is completed.  GVK plans to invest 50 billion rupees this year to expand the airport in Mumbai.
