Blackout Movement's Reggae Soul Artist Calibe is Having a "Great Day"

Calibe's melodic new single will have fans of hip hop and R&B bobbing their heads like they're hearing a classic again for the first time. With Ice Cube in the background and Blackout Movement at the controls, it's bound to be a "Great Day".

Nov. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- It seems reggae soul artist Calibe is always having a Great Day these days. Her soulful blend of reggae, R&B, pop and jazz is reminding fans of the soothing tones of Sade, and the modern appeal of Jazmine Sullivan. Her new single “Great Day” is a remix of the old school hip-hop classic “It Was a Good Day” by Ice Cube, and features familiar samples from the original throughout the song. The newly released, high quality video was directed by the producers of the remix, Blackout Movement (BM), and is steadily gaining popularity.

The concept for “Great Day” was born from the mind of DJ Blackout. The idea was to fuse the raw grit and familiarity of the original recording with the mellow sound and provocative arguments Calibe would bring to the new song. The name change was intended to let the listeners know that whether they were fans of Ice Cube’s gansta rap or a lady singing the blues, the record would appeal to the cross section and more than do justice to the original. As Calibe sings about a romantic encounter with her love interest, she describes how their interactions take them on a frolic “this way, that way, front way, back way”, leaving enough to the imagination for the listener to create his or her own mental picture of what a great day should be. The song is the title track of her 5 song EP, currently available for free through multiple online outlets, including her You Tube channel at http://www.youtube.com/MissCalibe. The Great Day EP features remixes of classic anthems that will keep your head bobbing and have you singing along like you're hearing them again for the first time. All tracks on the EP were produced / remixed by Blackout Movement.

The video was shot in South Florida and, while not following the exact narrative of the song, does a fantastic job of depicting the easy-like-Sunday-morning groove of the record. A glowing Calibe is picked up by her attractive love interest and taken to a barbecue with friends where they sneak away for a “sexy rendezvous”. She ends the day by performing to the audience of barbecue-goers who all seem to have had a great day. Dancehall artist Red Rat makes a quick cameo. BM members Blackout, Don P and PJ, directed and coordinated the shooting and editing of the video which can be viewed online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGctlJWjMs4.

To many, Calibe is a familiar face. She is a Jamaican-born female vocalist, currently living in South Florida where she records with Blackout Movement, as well as producers based locally and internationally. She grew up in Jamaica under the guidance of legendary producers Sly and Robbie, who’s influence secured her a vocal appearance on Beenie Man’s 2002 “Tropical Storm” album. She spent several years touring internationally with Beenie Man, Kevin Lyttle and Kymani Marley. To her credit, she has worked with producers including Salaam Remi and Kwame Holland, and has writing and recording credits with artists including Mims, Kevin Lyttle, Elephant Man, Sizzla Kalonji, Spragga Benz, Heath Hunter, Kymani Marley and more. She is the vocalist on the hook of “It’s My Birthday” by Ultimate, which is currently listed on electronic powerhouse Ultra Records’ annual dance compilation - Ultra 2011. Expect great things from her.

Blackout Movement is the producer of Mims "This is Why I'm Hot" and "Blow Ya Mind" from the Nicki Minaj debut album, Pink Friday. Their credits also include production with Jason DeRulo, Ja Rule, Jada Kiss, Junior Reid, Kymani Marley, Serani, Red Rat, Styles P and Bun B, to name a few.

The synergy between Calibe and Blackout Movement clearly promises big things for the future. We would be well advised to keep an ear out for more “great days” to come.
