Cheap Can Often Lead to Expensive in a Home Remodel

In these hard economic times cutting costs can often be enticing, but its not always a smart move. Hiring a contractor that is sub-par can often mean hiring a 2nd to repair the damage. Why not make sure your home is repaired right the first time?

Dec. 2, 2010 - PRLog -- Mike Sedik of Unique Properties has been in the construction industry for over a decade and has realized a trend with over 90 percent of his home remodel contracts. He was not the first contractor on the job.

“There have been some projects I have been the third contractor to be hired,” he says. “Cheap estimates don’t necessarily mean that you will get the job completed or the job done to your specifications. I know homeowners who have paid twice over for what a job is worth because it was done cheaply and badly the first time around”

In today’s economy, scam artists abound trying to make a quick buck off unsuspecting people. The local yellow pages will refer you to over a 100 construction companies and there are about a 100 more companies that are advertised in mailers, fliers that are left on your doorstep and business cards stuck in your windshield wiper. Most of these companies offer the lowest price available.

“Usually with a low price comes some fine print that has you forking over extra money for standard work that a reputable contractor would have included in the contract. To be frank most of these low price scams don’t come with a contract so that should be tip number 1. Always get a contract and read it line for line to make sure you don’t get scammed,” says Sedik.

Sedik suggests that homeowners consider three factors when looking into a contractor to take on a home improvement project.

“Quality, dependability and service,” says Sedik are the three things he values most in a good contractor. “A good contractor will have a track record that will prove that he uses good materials, was able to get the job done on time and provided skilled and quality work. You want the job done right, on time and in budget. Budget does not mean lowest or cheapest price. Rather think of it as the best price for the job on hand.”

Most homeowners do not properly research contractors before hiring them. A call to the Better Business Bureau or a few calls to references will save most homeowners a lot of trouble, heartache and money.  Remodeling Magazine advocates that on minimum a homeowner should get three written estimates detailing work to be done before hiring a contractor to work on a project in their home. It is also recommended that a homeowner make sure that the chosen contractor has experience with home remodel projects, as a remodeling job is different to construction. A remodel takes construction to the next level and requires a great deal of routing and working with existing infrastructure.
