Nissan LEAF is the First Electric Vehicle to win 2011 European Car of the Year Award - Trophy Nissan

Dec. 6, 2010 - PRLog -- The All-New 100% Electric Nissan LEAF has earned its award winning title as the 2011 European Car of the Year. In 47-year history of the annual competition, this is the first time an award has been given to an electric vehicle. The Nissan LEAF has beat 40 contenders to win motoring’s most important title. Among those contenders were vehicles from brands such as Ford, Volvo and many more. Those included in the jury were 57 leading motoring journalists from 23 European countries.

With three other electric vehicles in the pipeline from Nissan and with the imminent market introduction of four additional electric vehicles from our Alliance partner Renault – Nissan LEAF represents a significant first step toward a zero-emission future.” said Carlos Ghosn, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.’s President and CEO.

Unlike regular vehicles, the Nissan LEAF is powered by a compact electric motor in the front of the car, which drives the front wheels. Creating enough for a maximum speed of 145 km/h (90 mph), the AC motor of the Nissan LEAF develops 80 Kw of power and 280 Nm of torque.  The electric motor of the Nissan LEAF is powered by a Nissan-developed laminated lithium-ion battery with an output of more than 90 kW.

Standard features on the Nissan LEAF include regenerating braking, satellite navigation, air conditioning, parking camera with advanced on-board IT and telematics systems.

Currently, the zero-emission car is being built in Japan. As for North American, it will be produced when new manufacturing facilities open in late 2012 and early 2013. Deliveries in Japan and the United States begin this December.
