Dec. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- On the day set aside by the UN to raise awareness and recognize the needs and rights of persons with disabilities throughout the world, Healing Hands for Haiti International (HHHI) is opening a new clinic in Port au Prince to house physical therapy and medical services, classrooms, and headquarters administration. The two-storey facility, which replaces buildings destroyed in the January 12, 2010 earthquake, is wholly supported by funding provided by Direct Relief International (DRI), California, USA.

Direct Relief has many decades of experience supplying pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to NGOs and institutions in Haiti. The non-profit foundation has partnered with HHHI in re-establishing full services through a temporary physical medicine and rehabilitation clinic that will serve Haitians with disabilities until construction of a new out-patient complex is completed at the end of 2011. An agreement to build and fund operations of that new complex on the original HHHI property was signed with the International Committee of the Red Cross, Special Fund for the Disabled, on November 15.

Dr. Ben Nau, Country Medical Director of HHHI said at the press conference: “We are so grateful to DRI for their support of our continuing efforts to bring physical medicine and rehabilitation services and programs to Haiti, by Haitians and for Haitians.”

Eric Doubt, Executive Director of HHHI, expressed pride in the DRI partnership and the other significant rehabilitation partnerships including one with Handicap International in a prosthetic fabrication, fitting and physical therapy facility operating since March in Port au Prince. “We thank our partners and supporters, we welcome our clients and patients, staff and volunteers, Board members and ministry guests to Klinik Kay Kapab which marks HHHI’s recovery to full services for Haiti’s estimated 800,000 persons living with disabilities.
