Canaan Baptist Church to Offer “Christmas on Death Row”

Dec. 23, 2010 - PRLog -- Canaan Baptist Church Pastor Dr. Christopher A. Bullock will be sharing the Christmas spirit with prisoners on Death Row at the James T. Vaughan Correctional Center.

Canaan’s “Christmas on Death Row” will feature a 1:30 p.m. service at the facility at 1181 Paddock Road, Smyrna, DE on Christmas Day led by Rev.-Dr. Bullock as an extension of his on-going prison ministry efforts. He has an active Prison Ministry that assists recently released prisoners with job training and other re-entry skills and he’s also founder of the Delaware Coalition for Prison Reform and Justice. In early December, volunteers from Canaan Baptist served meals to the incarcerated at the Department of Correction.

Earlier this week, Canaan hosted several events planned at its church at 3011 New Castle Ave. As part of its “Christmas Canned Food Drive,” staff and volunteers will be providing baskets to some 100 families on Canaan’s staff and volunteers are busy. It also will be distributing gifts to more than 100 deserving children as part of its Angel Tree program and serve hot dinners to the needy and disadvantaged in the church community.

Last month, Bullock led the church’s efforts to give away clothes to needy families of all ages and genders, including meals and a scripture reading.  

Bullock, a native of Wichita, KS, is author of  “The Social Mission of the Black Church, A Call to Action”, a thought-provoking book in which he challenges black churches to do all it can to improve economic and educational opportunities for its community.  He has a history of getting his churches involved in the community.  In Chicago, he was pastor of the Progressive Baptist Church where he led an HIV/AIDS Awareness program, provided meals to the needy and housed a computer technology center. He also served as president of the Chicago Southside Branch of the NAACP.
