West Sound Academy Invites Local Students to Second Annual Founders’ Scholarship Day Competition

West Sound Academy (WSA), a private school in Poulsbo, Washington, is inviting local students to compete for scholarships on February 12, 2011 at the school’s second annual Founders’ Scholarship Day.

Jan. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- West Sound Academy’s second annual Founders’ Scholarship Day competition will take place this year on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at the school’s Poulsbo campus.  Earlier this month West Sound Academy (WSA) received authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the IB Diploma Programme beginning in Fall, 2011.  Following on that news, WSA established the IB Access Scholarship Fund to provide help to deserving students make a WSA IB Diploma education affordable. February’s competition offers outstanding students in the Kitsap County the opportunity to compete for a share of this new fund, and earn an annually renewable merit scholarship.  Students entering grades six through twelve and not currently attending West Sound Academy are eligible to receive renewable annual scholarships of up to $6,000. Such a merit-based scholarship earned when entering the sixth grade next year could contribute up to $42,000 toward tuition during an academic career at WSA.

The scholarship competition was established last year to honor the school’s co-founders, Dr. Edward Frodel and Dr. Gordon Parke, and many students who were interested in attending WSA participated in the event.   Jim Kolb, Director of Admissions, says, “We’re excited about offering this scholarship opportunity to prospective new students. Last year’s winners are thriving at WSA and have added so much to our community. Our IB Access Scholarship Fund contributes an added dimension to the competition and will help make an International Baccalaureate Diploma available to even more students.”

The Scholarship Competition begins at 9:00 AM and concludes at 12:30 PM on Saturday, February 12th and includes several components. Each student will take a Math Assessment and a Writing Assessment. In addition, participants may compete in up to two subject areas, including Math, Science, Essay Writing, Creative Writing, Visual Arts, and Performing Arts.  Parents who are interested in having their children compete for the scholarships should go to the West Sound Academy website page for Founders' Scholarship Day at http://www.westsoundacademy.org/admissions/founders-schol... , download the pre-registration form, and return it to the school by February 9th.  After the competition day, all the finalists will be notified and may be asked to meet with a WSA representative. The competition results, combined with an evaluation of the meeting and application package, form the basis for the final selection. Scholarship recipients will be notified by February 20th.
