Jan. 26, 2011 - PRLog -- As our weather patterns change and become more extreme, demand for safer housing is on the rise. Calls for innovative more secure housing join the voices of those looking for greener more economical alternatives. The interest in alternate building styles has sky rocketed. One such beautiful and affordable option is dome housing.  In the last decade, dome design has experienced increased demand and popularity.

Dome builder and designer Cindy Johnson offers one such alternative with her 'Sculptural Monolithic Dome.' Creating the design was an organic process  of research and consultation with experts culminating in the final blueprint. The properties of this home are impressive. If you were living in Haiti this home would still be standing and if you were in Toowoomba, once the flood waters receeded, you would remove the contents, pressure wash the interior and still have a home. Building a dome makes sense for a multitude of reasons, including energy effeciency, sustainability, low maintanence and the ultimate in family security. This style of building is the future. Johnson's 'Sculptural Monolithic Dome' design is meeting the needs of modern society. http://www.domediva.com

"I designed a cement dome because of the wild fires in British Columbia's Okanagan valley, but as I watch the upheaval around the world, living in a sculptural dome makes me feel totally secure." says designer Cindy Johnson. Her 38 foot diameter home boasts 6 inch thick cement walls covered with 4 inches of polyurethane foam and provides 1850 square feet of luxurious disaster proof living. "It is so easy to heat and cool, the dome structure so self supporting, it's worry free." states Johnson

Getting this unusual structure permitted was the first hurtle. Johnson consulted with both sculpters and architects before hiring the engineering firm that rendered the final blueprints.  The beauty of this design is that it does not require special equipment or expensive expertise.  The metal form for the concrete was built by Johnson and her team. The only building contractor involved errected the foundation. At $85.00 per square foot to build it came in at considerably less than conventional wood.

Joseph Sarkor of JMS Engineering Ltd. has hailed the sculptural dome as the most accessable plan for dome building to hit the market. " I was astounded by the structure when I did my final inspection before the pour. I enjoyed engineering the dome but seeing it in 3D was immensely gratifying". JMS Engineering has encouraged Johnson to make her dome blueprint available to the public. To access the very latest in  dome design visit http://www.domediva.com
