Colour Measurement Specialists Diversify Into Graphics Sector

New spectrodensitometers allow graphics industry to precisely evaluate colours on papers with optical brighteners

Jan. 27, 2011 - PRLog -- Colour and light measurement specialists Konica Minolta Sensing are moving into the graphics industry with the launch of a range of portable instruments specifically designed to meet the needs of the industry.

The new devices, called the FD-7 and FD-5 spectrodensitometers, allow precise evaluation on colour on papers which use optical brighteners, such as fluorescent papers and packaging materials.

Bosses claim this will address the graphics industry’s increasing requirements for digital measuring equipment, and allow the company to expand beyond their traditional markets which include the automotive, textile, pharmaceutical and food manufacturing sectors.

In doing so, they are drawing on decades of experience, which began with the launch of the world’s first hand-held colorimeter in 1982.

Andreas Ullrich is Marketing and Sales Manager of Konica Minolta Sensing Europe for the EMEA region.

He said: “Caused by the advancing digitalization in graphic-related industries, instrumental numerical colour control of printed materials has become a substantial part of printing technology, such as in quality management.

“The FD-7 and FD-5 are the solution to the widespread use of optical brighteners, which can mask the natural yellow shade of paper and make it appear a brighter and more luminous white.

“Depending on illumination, this can significantly impact the reproduction of printing colours.

“Whether printing design, prepress or printing itself – we discovered a new market for us here, which we will work systematically.”

The company will first target the developed Central and Western Europe economies before turning their focus to developing markets in Eastern Europe.

Konica Minolta Sensing specialises in developing state-of-the-art optical and image processing technologies, which help improve quality control and support R&D in a wide variety of industries.

Their colour management solutions are used to control and monitor quality in many areas of manufacturing, such as automotive, coatings, plastic, construction materials, food, chemicals and pharmaceutics.
