More Bed Bug Infestations Reported in 2010; Canine Scent Detection Proven Effective in Finding Pests

Feb. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) working with the University of Kentucky recently released results of a first-ever global bed bug study.  In the study, 1,000 pest control professionals from around the world were surveyed about their recent encounters with bed bugs.  According to NPMA, 95 percent of US pest control professionals reported treating bed bug infestations in 2010.  In contrast, just 25 percent of US pest control professionals reported encountering bed bugs in the year 2000, indicating that bed bug infestation is indeed on the rise across the nation.

The NPMA survey also reports that the majority of pest control professionals still rely upon visual identification when inspecting a property for bed bugs.  On that note, statistics based on research by the University of Florida indicate that sight detection is only 30 percent accurate in identifying bed bug infestation.
