Speaker Wire is an important component of any successful home theater or audio system!

Feb. 8, 2011 - PRLog -- Speaker wire is the pipe that delivers the sound to your speakers and audio amplifiers. Nowadays, the modern electronic devices like amplifiers, home theater systems, and public announcement systems use speaker wire to deliver high quality sound!  This is not the old school clear banana peel speaker wire type from the past.  The modern speaker wire is a thicker gauge cable that is made to support various speaker cable length runs while supporting today’s more powerful high tech speaker types.  With the popularity of residential home theater system it seems like every home is wired for sound.  http://www.cablingplus.com/t/cables/bulk-cable/speaker-wire

Since quality speaker wire is so essential there are a few things you need to know while buying it!  The first thing to consider is the material of which the speaker wire is made of. Copper is the best material but many manufactures try to use lower quality cheaper metals to save money and increase profits.  Look at the specifications carefully and make sure the speaker wire you are going to buy uses quality copper materials.  The type of metals used will have a direct affect on the resistance of the electronic signal over the speaker wire which will also affect the sound quantity.  Most quality speaker wires are made with 99% oxygen free copper.  Being one of the cleanest forms of copper the 99% oxygen free copper type offers less resistance which equals a better sound quality.  The insulation of the speaker wire is another important factor. The insulation is usually a PVC coating, which ensures that the wire is protected from damage that could cause issues with the entire system.   Make sure the speaker wire you are going to buy has a good quality jacket that can withstand the stress that often comes during an installation that could damage the cable and hinder performance.  Make sure that the insulation adheres to the guidelines set by fire and safety codes for in-wall installations.  A good quality speaker wire will have UL ratings clearly documented on the cable jacket.

The connectors also play a major role in the performance and efficiency of the speaker wires. Make sure you get the connectors that support your wire gauge requirements.  There are many speaker wire connectors in the market place that are fancy looking but they do a poor job creating the connection you need for quality sound performance.  If you are using speaker wire banana plug style connectors it is important to match the connector with the gauge of cable you are using.  Most quality banana plug connectors will give you a range of gauge size that it can support.  Make sure this range is within the gauge of cable you are using.  If you have longer cable runs that are using 12 gauge speaker cable you may have to get banana plugs that have a larger opening to support that thickness of cable.

In the end finding quality and good priced speaker wire is not difficult.  Don’t pay attention to the brand- focus on the specifications.  Look for quality metals, a good jacket, with UL ratings that will support your installation.
