Feb. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- A shoulder decompression can lead to inflammation of the shoulder, formation of bone spurs in the shoulder and bursitis there by, limiting the motion and movement of the shoulder. The decompressed shoulder also causes severe pain and discomfort in the shoulder. Reaching into pockets, raising the hands above a certain height et. would become very difficult.
Let us look at the treatment options available for a shoulder decompression.
Treatment: A diagnosis using X-rays is necessary to confirm decompressed shoulder. Once, shoulder is found to be the cause for discomfort, a doctor usually advices non-surgical options like anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy and a few activity modification techniques. Around 90 percent people are healed due to non-surgical intervention techniques.
The rest however, would have to go for a surgical option.
Surgery: Arthroscopic surgery is the most used surgical option for treating decompressed shoulders. There is also an option of an open surgery whose use is very rare though. Depending on the condition, either of the two techniques is preferred.
•   Arthroscopic surgery has been proven to be successful in more than 85 percent of the patients operated. Also, this surgical technique is a minimally invasive one used for treating joint disorders.
•   When compared to open surgeries, the pain caused by arthroscopy is comparably less and also, the recovery time after an arthroscopy is much quicker.
Risks: Any surgery can pose some risks and so does arthroscopy. The risks are-
•   infection
•   healing of the surgical wound
•   bleeding
•   frozen shoulder which can cause serious pain and joint stiffness
Recovery Period and Rehab: In most people, the pain from the shoulder begins to vanish within a few days allowing them to use their shoulder to perform simple activities.
•   Anywhere between a week or twelve, people can get back to their routines.
•   Usually by the end of 12 weeks after the surgery, most people can fully regain their shoulder strength.
•   During the recovery period, it is important to make sure that the shoulder does not go stiff, for which movements of the elbow, fingers and hands must be maintained if not the shoulder.
Shoulder decompression, unlike various other orthopedic conditions can be healed completely.
