Feb. 16, 2011 - PRLog -- A unique doll exhibition at Corp Executive Hotel Apartments Al Barsha – Dubai on March 16, 2011 will showcase over 100 dolls from around the world including Bulgaria, Armenia, Africa, the UAE, Jordan, India, China, England, Russia, France and Pakistan. Titled Dolls Are Us, the show is being sponsored by HMH – Hospitality Management Holdings and ASGC – Al Shafar General Contracting, and Supported by Dubai International Art Centre

At one time or the other all of us have had our little obsession with dolls. While most girls outgrow it by the time they step into their teens, others continue to be enchanted all their lives. Dolls are not merely toys. They are as much a collector’s item as any of the other crafts.

Now doll-lovers in the UAE will have a rare opportunity to see some of the finest dolls from many different parts of the world including a large collection of Victorian porcelain dolls. This unique doll show will be held at Corp Executive Hotel Apartments Al Barsha Dubai on March 16, 2011 and is being jointly organized by HMH - Hospitality Management Holdings, ASGC – Al Shafar General Contracting and Dubai International Art Centre.

MPJ – Marketing Pro-Junction has put together a beautiful range of dolls for the show. Titled Dolls Are Us, the exhibition will have over 100 dolls on display including Bulgarian, Armenian, African, Victorian, Indian, Russian, French, Emarati, Jordanian, Pakistani and Chinese dolls. Dressed up with elaborate costumes and rich ornaments, some are evocative of the baroque and rococo styles while others mirror the folk culture.

Says Aamir Pervez, General Manager, Corp Executive Hotel Apartments Al Barsha –Dubai, “The history of dolls is perhaps as old as civilization. In every era, dolls have had a very special significance. Besides being a symbol of the times and trends, dolls have been objects of great value. In fact, dolls have been considered the special domain of children for only about a hundred years. We really feel proud to host this unique exhibition and have a beautiful surprise in store for the guests who attend the preview.”

Hina Bakht, Vice-President, MPJ, has been collecting dolls for nearly two decades now. Says she, “Doll-making is one of the world’s oldest crafts. The material used for making dolls is very often linked to the era and level of development of the place and its people. Whereas in the ancient times dolls were mostly made of stone, wood, clay, metal, leather, rags, paper, porcelain; in modern days  rubber and plastic have come to replace these.”

An interesting aspect of doll craft is that some artists can do a doll resembling your near and dear ones. Says Judy Ren, an internationally-acclaimed designer of dolls who specializes in Victorian porcelain dolls and was recently in Dubai. “We do a lot of custom-made dolls. On special request we can create look-alikes of people as well as their entire families.”

No wonder, Judy’s dolls are extremely popular all over the world including countries like New York, London, Paris and Sydney. Says she proudly, “One of my clients in Paris informed me that nearly every home in Paris has a doll by me. I think this is the greatest compliment to my work.”

Equally exciting are the works from other countries. Particularly interesting are the Bulgarian folk dolls – wearing traditional costumes worn during the Spring Festival. Says Teodora Varadinova who specially brought these dolls for the show all the way from Bulgaria, “The month of March according to Bulgarian folk beliefs marks the beginning of spring. Therefore on March 1 and the days after people give to each other small wool dolls named Pigo and Penda called Martenitzi in Bulgarian.”

A highlight of this event will be a live demonstration by Teodora who will show doll lovers the various steps that go into making Martenitzi. Says she, “All my dolls are hand-made. A single piece can take up to a month and a half to finish. Also, each of my dolls is different. Whether it is the costumes or the accessories, every little detail counts.”

Talking about this unique exhibition, Says Hina, “Like every other craft, traditional doll-making is a dying art kept alive by a handful of artists. By providing these artists a platform to showcase their creativity and skills, Corp Executive Hotel Apartments – Al Barsha wishes to support their efforts in keeping alive the rich craft of doll-making.”

The exhibition will open on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 7.00pm with a unique doll show. Make-up artists from top brands will create the ‘Porcelain Beauties’ who would be dressed in special attires designed by none other than Francois Desroches.
