Feb. 22, 2011 - PRLog -- Let’s start with the fuel system first. The components of the high pressure fuel system are manufactured to very close tolerances and operate at very extremely high pressures. Fuel system components can be destroyed if contamination bypasses a plugged or non-OEM filter. Mopar fuel filters for the 6.7L diesel is a two stage filter that is rated to 5 mirons. Just to put that into perspective, an average human hair is 90 mirons.

Types of contamination:
1. Sediment/debris: dirt, dust, rust, or other metallic particulars
2. Water: emulsified or solid
3. Organic: fungus and bacteria that live and feed on diesel fuel

With the introduction of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, a new type of contamination is beginning to emerge. It’s called asphaltenic contamination. Asphaltenic contamination is a byproduct of the refining process. It will show up on the surface of the fuel filter as a brown tarlike substance. Next week, I will outline some ways to prevent fuel contamination.
