Follow on Google News | ![]() Osteoporosis and Tooth LossOsteoporosis is a bone condition that affects over 10 million Americans, particularly women.
By: Dr. Jose J. Alvarez, DMD While we may be aware that this condition affects our bodies, particularly the hips, wrists and spine, it also affects the jaw, creating dental problems. As a matter of fact, over 90% of women over the age of 65 suffer from some form of dental bone loss. If you’re missing teeth, the process is greatly accelerated. However, a great way to prevent further loss is to replace any missing teeth with dental implants, which will firmly anchor the false tooth and help in stalling the progression of osteoporosis of the jaw. This happens because you’re distributing the impact of chewing more evenly. Early warning signs of oral osteoporosis may include: loosening of teeth, poorly fitting dentures, difficulty in speaking or eating or teeth detaching from the gums. If you experience any of these symptoms, a simple visit to the dentist can diagnose the presence of osteoporosis in the jaw with an X-ray. If a diagnosis is made, you will need to follow up with a visit to your physician to determine overall bone health with a non-invasive bone density test. Treatment may include calcium and/or hormonal replacement therapy. As always, prevention is the key in preserving our health. Regular exercise, a healthy diet and regular visits to the dentist all play a major role in ensuring good oral health. You should visit your dentist at least once or twice a year for cleanings and checkups. Our office offers all phases of dentistry, including the most advanced cosmetic procedures available in our industry. All performed in a warm, inviting atmosphere. Give us a call and we’d be happy to schedule you a consultation. Our office offers all phases of dentistry, including the most advanced cosmetic procedures available in our industry.
