By: Lisa Hernandez Dental infection usually begins from a common tooth decay or cavity. Tooth decay occurs when bacteria comes in contact with food particles on the tooth surface. This acidic combination attacks the tooth enamel, breaking it down. As the cavity gets deeper, bacteria enters the pulp tissue causing infection within the tooth. Typically the body fights back, but if the condition is chronic then symptoms begin to appear. Pain when chewing, fever, swelling of the gums and the appearance of pus are all possible signs of a problem and should be addressed immediately. An infection can be easily be diagnosed by X-rays and/or a periodontal probe. Once an infection is present treatment options are: a root canal or an extraction of the tooth. In some cases, the infection site may also need to be incised and drained. Antibiotics will accompany any treatment plan to ensure that the infection is completely cured. The most important thing to remember is prevention. Regular brushing and flossing are of utmost importance in preventing tooth decay in the first place. Regular dental visits will also allow the opportunity to spot a problem in those cases where pain or other obvious symptoms are not yet present.
