March 30, 2011 - PRLog -- Over the past decade, traditional hedges have been the screening greenery of choice for Southern Californians, but the trend is now changing, says Greg Wallace, co-owner of Instant Jungle International.
“Our high-end clients in places like Newport Coast, Malibu and Pacific Palisades used to install Queen palms and traditional hedges to add privacy to their yards,” explains Wallace. “But we’ve noticed a distinct change in trends over the past year.”
Wallace first saw the trend with his luxury resort clients in Las Vegas, with more orders for the more exotic bamboo types for their outdoor landscaping. Recently, he’s noticed that the more progressive landscape architects in Orange County and Los Angeles have been installing these bamboo species, and using them in as a green living screen and to soften walls.
“We have promoted bamboo as the perfect living screen,” says Wallace. “Many of our Malibu clients have used them to deter the paparazzi without having to erect a fence or wall that blocks the light or a view. But now these landscape architects are getting creative.”
Most people outside of the nursery or landscape industry assume that there’s only a few species of bamboo, but there’s actually over 20-30 available varieties, with a wide variety of colors, heights and shapes. This new trend sees landscape architects using more exotic species that have canes, or culms, in different colors, striations and shapes. For instance, landscape architects have been creating residential oases for their high-end clients using the more exotic species, like the curvaceous shape of Buddha Belly bamboo (Bambusa Ventricosa) and the striking contrast of the yellow culms and green leaves of Phyllostachys Vivax Aureocaulis.
“Now that the trend is catching on here in Southern California, our more exotic bamboo species are more popular than ever,” comments Wallace. “We’re excited to see these beautiful species leave our nurseries, and hope to see this trend continue.”
