April 10, 2011 - PRLog -- Encinitas, CA----Grauer School students Ben Webster (8th Grade) and Stewart Wirick (10th Grade) competed with over 900 students and won awards in two separate categories at the Greater San Diego County Science & Engineering Fair that was held at the Balboa Park Activity Center on March 22-27, 2011.  The fair provides and maintains a continuous process that seeks to encourage and award professional excellence, promote literacy and educational enrichment and provide unique opportunities for independent achievement in science and technology.

Stewart Wirick's project, “Can a Smart Phone Battery be Charged by Radio Waves?” explored methods to recover electrical power from stray radio waves.  Stewart concluded that it’s possible for an array of antennas to capture enough energy to recharge a smart phone battery.  Stewart has worked on this project since September of 2010 and was awarded a first place prize in the category of Engineering – Energy & Transportation.  He was also granted an invitation to compete in the California State Science Fair in Los Angeles in May, where he'll be competing against county science fair winners from throughout the state.

Ben Webster's project, “Alaskan Gray Wolf Enrichment”, examined how offering different natural enrichment components could enhance the lives of seven wolves at the California Wolf Center in Julian.  Ben worked on his project for one-and-a-half years, making numerous trips to the Julian Wolf Center to conduct research.  Ben was awarded third place in his category of Animal Science along with a Professional Science Award and scholarship prize from the San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association.
