China mines 3.6 billion tons per year and plans to import more than 165 million tons in 2011 which represents nearly 45% of worldwide coal consumption.
By: Evan W. Lipstein, C.E.O. India's coal-fired power sector is under tremendous pressure. It has been reported that nearly 30% of Indian coal fired power plants are currently at "critical" levels. Coal stockpiles are running very low. India isn't the only major coal reliant nation facing a shortage. China's Ministry of Railway recently announced they're experiencing hard challenges to supply to Chinese coal-fired power plants across China. China's Coal Ministry is placing more than 2600 additional coal trains in order to deliver needed coal. Government sources said coal stockpiles at 349 Chinese power plants have "dropped to the danger mark or even below it." India's coal problems are driven by a huge demand and high prices. China is having an unusually cold winter, and new government programs set to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions are forcing plant shut downs despite growing demand for power. Coal use is increasing due to further urbanization, supported by new construction starts. China needs steel, India needs cement, and Asia’s major cities need coal to fuel their power supply. There is an estimated 1.6 billion tpa of coal currently supplied to Asia’s smaller Industrial Boiler market, with more than 2 million small boilers scattered across Asia. India and China, the two fastest growing coal-consuming countries must do all they can to save on precious coal. Coal is their most abundant but challenged fuel resource. Why is coal challenged? Coal prices are steadily increasing. In China this week sub-bituminous coal with calorific value of 5,800 kcal/kg costs more than $120.00 per metric tonne. Coal prices are expected to climb as we enter the hot summer months and with much of China experiencing a severe drought - hydroelectric power is severely hampered. How to save on Coal use? Coal which swells excessively can forms sticky masses on the traveling grate boilers, which adhere together and prevent the free flow of combustion air. These factors all contribute towards low efficiency performance from Chinese IBs. Combustion systems of Chinese IBs are usually low quality. Chain grate and traveling grate combustion grates are usually lower than 60%. Since IB's in China run on raw coal, burnt on low quality combustion grates results in poor boiler efficiencies. Even on relatively well operated and well maintained traveling grate boilers, combustion efficiencies are typically only 75%. Smaller IBs, using chain and reciprocating grates, are reported to have boiler efficiencies below 50%.
