PRLog -- Philadelphia, PA - A TOWN HALL MEETING TO DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL SECURITY will be held at Mother Bethel AME Church (http://www.MotherBEthel.org)
located at 419 South 6th Street in Philadelphia this coming Sunday May 1, 2011 immediately following the 11am worship service at 12:45pm. The meeting is hosted by Mother Bethel, but sponsored by the Black Women’s Health Imperative (http://www.blackwomenshealth.org)
, an organization devoted to advancing the health and wellness of black women through advocacy, education, and leadership development. The goals of the town hall meeting are to educate church and community members about issues surrounding social security, discuss potential budget cuts, and teach the community what it can do in the face of so much uncertainty. “Cutting programs like Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security is certainly disastrous for Black women,” says Eleanor Hinto Hoytt, President and CEO of the Black Women’s Health Imperative. “This should not be the topic of conversations for any policymaker. But unfortunately, the conversation is happening on Capitol Hill right now, and that’s why the Imperative is in Philadelphia – to help educate and mobilize members of our communities around this issue.” The keynote speaker is Dr. Maya Rockeymoore, nationally recognized American policy scholar, author, and media commentator. Dr. Rockeymoore has appeared on national cable news shows and NPR and has been an outspoken advocate on issues regarding health, income security, and education. Dr. Rockeymoore is also the Founder and CEO of Global Policy Solutions. The Black Women’s Health Imperative approached Mother Bethel about hosting the meeting. “This is an important and timely conversation in light of all the talk in our nation about the future of Social Security,” said Pastor Mark Tyler of Mother Bethel. “African Americans need to know how potential changes in entitlement programs like Social Security may impact them, so we are happy to serve as host of this important conversation.”
The town hall meeting on Sunday May 1, 2011 at 12:45pm is free and open to the public. The media is invited to attend. All press inquiries should be directed to Leslie Patterson-Tyler of Tyler Made Productions at (609) 247-2632 or Leslie@TylerMadePR.com.
