Spring is Tick Season in the Triangle

May 16, 2011 - PRLog -- Here in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill-Cary region, spring is the time of year when ticks and other vector pests--pests that carry and transmit disease--are becoming more active, therefore making them a greater threat to humans and pets as outdoor activities increase.

In particular, ticks carry a number of potentially fatal diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, babesiosis, tularemia, and others.  Common symptoms that accompany any of these illnesses include fever/chills, skin rash, and aches/pains.  In extreme cases, paralysis, shock, or death can occur.

According to the Centers for Disease Control there were almost 30,000 confirmed cases of Lyme disease in 2009 alone in the US.  Similarly, in 2008, more than 2,500 incidences of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever were recorded, with North Carolina being among a handful of states where more than 60% of all incidences of the disease occurred.

All of these aforementioned illnesses are transmitted by the bite of infected ticks.  To prevent tick bites, there are a number of simple measures one can take.
