Liquid Manure Saves a Pile in Fertilizer Costs for Athletic Fields and Golf Courses

This "Brown" is the New "Green" for Building Sustainable Fertilizer Programs

May 18, 2011 - PRLog -- For over 5,000 years, manure has proven to be a simple, effective and trusted fertilizer.  Today schools, universities, municipalities and counties across Texas are using a liquid manure concentrate to save a pile, so to speak, on fertilization costs while building a sustainable fertilization program for their athletic fields and golf courses.

With ever increasing fertilizer costs and shrinking budgets, maintenance directors and golf course superintendents are turning to Cow Wow, a liquid concentrate of fresh dairy cow manure which has been processed to remove solids, pathogens and, best of all, the manure odor.

Cost savings from using such an abundant, easily harvested resource can be tremendous.  As summed up by Leslie Hearne, founder of Dairy Waste Management, the producer of Cow Wow, “For as little as $37 an acre, you gotta love poo!”

Tim Speyrer, a parks superintendent with Travis County Parks and Recreation, replaced his traditional fertilizer with Cow Wow and "noticed immediate greening and immediate improvement in overall turf health.  The grass is an intensely dark green."

Travis County applies their liquid manure through a fertigation system with no clogging issues.  It can also be applied with a spray rig or, for smaller jobs, a hose-end applicator.

Manure compost provides slow release of nutrients, and these long-term benefits appear to be no different in liquid manure.  The City of Converse sprayed one application of Cow Wow on a football field last fall.  After a severely harsh winter followed by current drought conditions, “that field is the only one still green,” says Karl Hoppes, Maintenance Director.

Mike Chandler, Superintendent of Hills of Cove Country Club in Copperas Cove, Texas sees a lot of benefits in using liquid dairy cow manure.  “I had an issue with sod recovering from our harsh winter.  Where I sprayed Cow Wow this spring you can definitely tell almost to a straight line where we had used it and where we hadn’t.  It promoted faster growth and more recovery and healing from the winter damage.  It is very easy to apply.  We diluted it in a backpack sprayer with no burning and no application issues.”

In addition to cost savings, ease of application and superior results, liquid dairy cow manure makes this "brown" the new "green" for entities practicing authentic, sustainable green efforts.  Sustainability is about ensuring profitable businesses while making decisions that are in the long-term interest of the environment and communities.  That philosophy makes users of recycled dairy cow manure part of the “Solution to Poo-lution”, helping to turn an enormous manure waste problem into a cost-effective, sustainable, and eco-friendly fertilization program.
