Investments in Actual Gold and Precious Metals Soar

According to a report on May 19, 2011 from Reuters, investors turned away from gold-backed exchange-traded funds in the first quarter in favor of coins and bars, industry-sponsored trade group World Gold Council said in a report.

Gold coin and bar investment rose in most geographical areas in the first quarter, the WGC data showed, more than doubling in China to 90.9 tones, rising 54 percent in the United States to 22.5 tones and almost doubling in Europe to 78.1 tones.
Central banks were also major gold buyers, adding 129.3 tones to their holdings, up from 58.8 tones in the first quarter of last year.
