Follow on Google News | Nearly 80 Churches In Eastern Pennsylvania Rally In Philadelphia In Support Of Public EducationMayor Michael Nutter & School Superintendent Dr. Arlene Ackerman Will Address The Crowd
By: Leslie Patterson-Tyler - TylerMadepr.com Rally attendees are hoping to get the attention of state lawmakers working on the budget in hopes that proposed funding cuts to public education can be averted. The AME Church has a long history of working in the arena of education. Since the 1700s, AME Church buildings often served a dual function of educating children and adults who could not otherwise obtain an education. The first university in America owned and operated by African Americans was Wilberforce University in Ohio, an AME institution. The AME Church firmly believes that education is the key to success for young people in our region and that we must do everything possible to help them get a good head start in life. The media is invited to the “Save Our Schools” rally and press conference on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 10:30am at St. Matthew AME Church, 215 North 57th, Philadelphia.
