May 23, 2011 - PRLog -- THE PASTORS AND MEMBERS OF THE PHILADELPHIA ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH WHICH REPRESENTS NEARLY 80 CHURCHES IN EASTERN PENNSYLVANNIA,  will hold a rally and press conference in support of public education on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 10:30am at St. Matthew AME Church, 215 North 57th Street, in West Philadelphia. The rally and press conference is hosted by Bishop Richard Franklin Norris, who presides over the Philadelphia Annual Conference. Both Mayor Michael Nutter and School Superintendent Dr. Arlene Ackerman will address the crowd. The Philadelphia Annual Conference includes churches from the city of Philadelphia and surrounding area, the Main Line, Chester County, the Poconos, Lancaster, Harrisburg, Canonsburg, Shippensburg, and many other areas.

Rally attendees are hoping to get the attention of state lawmakers working on the budget in hopes that proposed funding cuts to public education can be averted. The AME Church has a long history of working in the arena of education. Since the 1700s, AME Church buildings often served a dual function of educating children and adults who could not otherwise obtain an education. The first university in America owned and operated by African Americans was Wilberforce University in Ohio, an AME institution. The AME Church firmly believes that education is the key to success for young people in our region and that we must do everything possible to help them get a good head start in life.

The media is invited to the “Save Our Schools” rally and press conference on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 10:30am at St. Matthew AME Church, 215 North 57th, Philadelphia. To confirm your attendance contact Leslie Patterson-Tyler at Leslie@TylerMadePR.com or (609) 247-2632.
