June 6, 2011 - PRLog -- IRVINE, Calif.—June 6, 2011 –R.D. Olson Construction broke ground to build San Juan Capistrano’s first new hotel in twenty years. The Residence Inn by Marriott received the fanfare of nearby longtime residents at a groundbreaking event in which Mayor Sam Allevato welcomed the hotel into the landscape. The hotel’s developer, R.D. Olson Development, will retain ownership through its related entity, Camino Capistrano SPE. At completion, the Residence Inn by Marriott will be the city’s second hotel.

“San Juan Capistrano is rich in character,” said Robert Olson, CEO/president, R.D. Olson Construction. “We wanted the hotel to capture the city’s spirit.”

The Residence Inn by Marriott’s distinctive Spanish-style charm will begin with its exterior. Landscaping plans call for plentiful lush plants native to California outlining dramatically lit colored concrete walkways winding their way throughout the premises. To adhere to California’s active lifestyle, R.D. Olson will build a 1,125- square-foot sports court for playing basketball and volleyball. An 850-square-foot putting green and a 3,000-square-foot pool area perched high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and nearby Doheney Beach Park, will make for a picture-perfect hotel setting.

In building the Residence Inn, R.D. Olson Construction is set to ensure that the architecture stays in keeping with San Juan Capistrano’s Spanish influence inside as well as out. Bountiful use of warm colors and complementary artwork will weave throughout the 92,500-square-foot hotel that houses 130 guest rooms and suites, and 1,500 square feet of meeting space, which includes a meeting and board room. High beam ceilings in the lobby, and brick pavers and wood combination flooring are part of what will define the hotel’s mission-style flavor. As part of the lobby, R.D. Olson will build the Hearth Room, fitted with a fireplace, couches, chairs and tables to make for a comfortable place so guests may relax. The hotel also will include 1,000-square-foot fitness center and a separate breakfast room for visitors to enjoy their morning coffee and afternoon snack. As an added benefit, the building’s south side has ocean views.

The Residence Inn by Marriott site is strategically located within close proximity to a mega soccer complex, local shopping and San Juan Capistrano Mission—one of America’s most frequented tourist attractions.

Furthermore, The San Juan Capistrano hotel will reveal the newest generation of the Residence Inn brand. Upgrades include enhanced space layout in the living areas accomplished by furnishing the rooms with new sectional couches and building a television stand and desk combination; replacing the typical carpet/tile pattern in the baths with tile-only flooring; and building a unit designed and equipped specifically for e-devices.

Awbrey Cook McGill Architects, based in San Diego, Calif. provided the architectural design, while Kling/Barta Design, LLC of Shawnee Mission, Kansas designed its interior.

The expected completion date is set for the first quarter of 2012. The construction project cost is $13 million.

R.D. Olson Construction, based in Irvine, Calif., was founded in 1979. It has grown into one of the top 50 general contracting firms in California, building such establishments as the 174-room Renaissance ClubSport in Aliso Viejo; AVIA Long Beach Hotel; Marriott Newport Coast Villas, Newport Beach; Ojai Valley Inn & Spa Resort, Ojai; and four Marriott Residence Inns in Long Beach, Burbank, Oceanside and Irvine.
