June 16, 2011 - PRLog -- Chit Chat Cafe Live Hosts Nancy Bartie and Lisa Kocher, along with Special Correspondent, Betty Anne Messina Martino are thrilled to announce that their idol, iconic lead singer of Paul Revere and the Raiders, Mark Lindsay, is joining them tonight on Chit Chat Cafe Live.

The hosts are sharing, "We grew up playing his music.  It played all day in my house, in our bedrooms, dancing with the hair brush in our hand (our pretend microphone) singing all day to Mark Lindsay lead singer of Paul Revere and The Raiders.  Indian Reservation loudly played on the portable record player that we took to the beach, the park, or just sitting on the front porch with all of our teenage friends dancing and singing along!  We would laugh with delight looking at Tiger Beat pictures of Mark Lindsay....we would swoon (what an old fashioned word....rarely used today)  looking at Mark's dreamy eyes, his long hair, and oh those bell bottoms and the fringe!  Let's not forget their voices, their patriotic looking costumes, and what a crush we all had on Mark Lindsay!"

We can't believe we get to talk with Mark Lindsay tonight on our Chit Chat Cafe Live Show!  Join us 10pmEST/7pmPST http://www.artistfirst.com/chitchat.htm  Click listen live!

Mark was born in Oregon, and was  raised in Idaho, We've learned that he started his career in Freddy Chapman's Idaho Playboys and their singer. Mark and "Mooney" White, and Dick, along with Paul Revere Dick and Jerry Labrum, quickly formed The Downbeats.  After their first contract with Gardena Records, in 1961, they became Paul Revere and the Raiders.

With Mark, as the lead vocalist, they had seventeen Top 20 hits including his own hit "Arizona".  Mark shares that it's still hard for him to imagine that a skinny, geeky, shy, farm kid got so lucky.

They were the first rock and roll group signed to Columbia Records, and the first group to bring Columbia a gold rock and roll record.  Ken Barnes, in Phonograph Record Magazine (March 1973): stated:  "They came out of theNorthwest playing in that region's dominant style as exemplified by the Wailers, Sonics,Kingsmen, and other local hotshots -- raw, wild organ/sax-dominated versions of raunchy rock and roll and R&B records. Their first Jerden Records release was recorded live with Mark Lindsay displaying bombastic bull-throated vocal power. Similarly, their first Columbia LP, HERE THEY COME [expanded on the November 2000 release of MOJO WORKOUT], sports ferocious live versions of 'Money,' 'Louie Louie,' 'Do You Love Me,' 'You Can't Sit Down,' 'Big Boy Pete,' and 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo.'"

Columbia Records signed The Raiders in 1963 due to their local success of "Louie Louie," and Columbia released it as the group's first single.  Although it was a big success in the Northwest, the Kingsmen's version of the song was unstoppable as the it took the country by storm...perhaps because of its unintelligible and some say obscene lyrics. We are laughing now as the story is shared that the Kingsmen's version of "Louie Louie" with lead singer Jack Ely singing too close to the awkwardly-placed microphone and a mouth full of braces.  Paul Revere and The Raiders version truly has an obscene ad-lib in the guitar solo.

Not surprisingly, The Who were paying attention to Paul Revere and the Raiders during this time.....just listen to 1964 Columbia/Legacy The Raiders Legend of Paul Revere....and then listen The Who's "Lubie (Come Back Home)" (1965) from WHO'S MISSING -- you'll hear an identical song... note for note, word for word, ad-lib for ad-lib, with Roger Daltrey's vocal style an exact copy of Lindsay's on the original song. By the way, "Louie, Go Home" was also covered by David Bowie.

The Raiders released "Steppin' Out," as the house band on Dick Clark's "Where the Action Is."  Ken Barnes calls that "a classic number with a brilliant proto typically punk Lindsay vocal, and the next single, the pulsing rocker 'Just Like Me' [later covered by Pat Benatar] went Top 10."

MIDNIGHT RIDE, was the follow-up album, is #63 in Tom Hibbert's "The Perfect Collection - The Rock Albums Everybody Should Have and Why." He says, "There was nothing innocuous about the Raiders' music, just listen to the power and drive of 'I'm Not Your Stepping Stone.'" (And check out the Sex Pistols' recent version.)

With Mark Lindsay as lead singer, Paul Revere & the Raiders, recorded new music for Columbia through 1973, including the largest selling single in Columbia Records history to
that date, "Indian Reservation."

At the same time, Mark had a solo recording career and recorded the platinum single "Arizona," available on THE BEST OF MARK LINDSAY, the ARIZONA/SILVERBIRD combined CD, and ARIZONA AND OTHER STATES OF MIND.

The group returned to its R&B roots with "Chain of Fools" one of a few cuts that made it to THE LEGEND anthology.  Called THE LOST ALBUM, the Raiders' final album has never been released.  Barnes concludes, "The enthralling precise harmonies -- in short, some of the best American rock and roll of the sixties."
