Follow on Google News | Lola Astanova Showcase Concert In Manhattan July 5, 2011International virtuoso pianist and composer Lola Astanova will give a rare showcase performance at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge on Tuesday, July 5, at 7PM.
Ms. Astanova received attention in the U.S. after she was featured as the centerpiece of a $1.59 million Classical Superstars Fantasy Concert emceed by Regis Philbin offered in Neiman Marcus’ legendary 100th Anniversary Christmas Book. The project became a testament to Lola’s unique entertainment appeal and her ability to attract the imagination of a wider and younger audience with her eclectic piano repertoire. Today, with nearly 3 million online views, Lola is among the most watched virtuoso performers in the world. Astanova is a player of fierce clarity…..The Palm Beach Post ….At a benefit concert for Haiti earthquake victims, Lola Astanova drew murmurs as she entered Steinway Hall wearing a midriff-baring top and low-rise jeans. The 28-year-old classical pianist greeted concertgoers with “Hi guys,” then dove into a spectacular rendition of Rihanna’s “Please Don’t Stop the Music.” Astanova’s unabashed embrace of her obvious sex appeal is a technique used liberally by many pop artists but employed less often in the classical world. And her style of career building is more like that of Taylor Swift; she promotes herself by tweeting, blogging and posting videos of her performances on-line — all still relatively new behavior for a classical musician. In an approach reminiscent of Radiohead, fans who want to buy her music can set whatever price they feel is fair for the recordings. All of this might be considered a stunt if Astanova’s classical pedigree wasn’t undeniable. Though still a relative unknown even to classical listeners, she has appeared at the Kennedy Center in Washington and performed with London Symphony Orchestra conductor Valery Gergiev. The Russian-born musician began studying piano as a six-year-old and played concerts in Europe as a teenager before moving to the United States, where she studied at Rice University in Houston.
