The Silva 1-2-3 system is a simple 3 step process, so grab your Silva Compass and follow this simple guide.
Firstly place the compass on the map, set the edge of the compass along your desired line of travel. Next, rotate the compass until the North point on the dial points towards North on the map. Check that the compass housing lines coincide with the map's meridians. Finally, hold the compass in hand and turn your body until the red point of the compass needle (North) lines up with the red arrow in the bottom of the compass housing. The front of the compass with the travel direction arrow will now be pointing towards your destination. It really is as easy as 1-2-3!

When using a mirror-sighted compass be sure to angle the mirror around 45 degrees towards you and hold it out in front with a straight arm. Look in the mirror to check that the needle aligns with the red/black N/S arrow and sight above the mirror towards an object that is in line with your desired direction of travel.
