Tips to Protect Against Pests this Fourth of July

There are a number of precautions that you can take to keep problem pests at bay while also protecting your family.

1. Wear protective clothing.  If you plan to cook out or watch fireworks outdoors this evening, know that this time of day is when disease carrying mosquitoes are at the peak of their activity.  Always wear loose fitting long sleeved shirts and long pants to avoid bites.

2. Wear insect repellent containing DEET. Spray your clothing any exposed skin with a pest repellent before going outdoors.  Make sure to read the instructions carefully before applying to prevent injury.

3. Clean up food residues if picnicking.  Nothing draws pests faster than greasy or sweet food residues.  Make sure to cover foods that attract pests.  Also, properly dispose of waste to prevent attracting pests.

4. If you encounter a dangerous pest, leave it alone.  In most cases with stinging insects such as fire ants, wasps, bees, and yellow jackets, swatting at or crushing these insects will trigger an attack.
