“When we sat down to design the new PARD-S071TW, we wanted to make a purpose-built computer for managed fleets where consumer-grade computers are not rugged or reliable enough. So we made a list of all of the features a user would wish for in an in-vehicle computing system,” says George Liao, American Portwell Technology’s senior product marketing manager. “Taking up as little space as possible was a given, as was the need to survive hard work and harsh environments,” Liao confirms, “so we whittled it down to a mere 7.83” x 5.51” x 2.36” and put it in a metal aluminum case. Touchscreen is the most intuitive of all control interfaces being implemented inside a vehicle, so we added a wide seven-inch 16:9 touch display, then gave it an IP65-compliant protective seal. Wiring could have been a problem,” Liao explains, “but the all-in-one architecture eliminates complicated system wiring by merging several fixed function systems into a single high-performance system.”

The PARD-S071TW offers a variety of operating system choices, including Linux, QNX, Microsoft® Windows® XP Embedded and Windows CE. These embedded operating system choices provide easy customization with affordable versions of the familiar desktop OS to minimize operator training costs. Liao also points out that PARD-S071TW’s x86-based computing core makes the telematics operation easy and less troublesome. “The system software is more flexible than the traditional entry-level RISC-platform,” Liao explains. “It integrates the functionality of multiple devices into a single system because an x86-based structure like this does not require complicated and expensive embedded OS porting processes. Consequently, investment in this unit comes with greater ROI.”
