By: Steve Newton Steve Newton, Founder of the SSFOA in November of 2008 stated: The Silver Star Families of America (SSFOA) has one mission; to remember, honor and assist the wounded and ill of our Armed Forces. And for years the Silver Star Families of America, along with other wonderful organizations, have fought against the stigma associated with PTS in regard to Soldiers returning from a combat zone. It seems that PTS is one of the few remaining wounds of war that people don’t want to talk about. Today it has been announced that the SSFOA will no longer use the term PTSD: Steve Newton, founder of the SSFOA stated, “We do not consider Post Traumatic Stress a “disorder.” For a long time now our organization has simply called it PTS. Now we are urging everyone to do the same.” “Calling it PTSD is automatically labeling the individual with a "disorder" and minimizing the effects of the wound. These folks are already in pain and suffering and we will not be a part of stigmatizing them.” Newton finished by stating, “the time has come for everyone to drop the “D” and offer a hand.” http://waronterrornews.typepad.com/ In the September of 2011 issue of their magazine, the American Legion explains why they too, have dropped the "D" from PTSD. Steve Newton, Founder of the SSFOA had nothing but praise for the American Legion: “I’m thrilled that the Legion has followed our lead and discarded the “disorder” # # # The mission of the Silver Star Families of America is to remember, honor and assist combat wounded, ill and dying active duty and veterans from ALL wars.
