When it comes to the question of what a BNC connector is, there are generally two types that need to be described. While they both do a good job in terminating the cables that connect the CCTV system, they do have some large differences though, both in the way that they are installed and also in the effectiveness that they possess. This means that you will have to make a decision regarding what type of BNC connector you are going to go for when installing your home CCTV system.
The first type of BNC connector is known as a crimp type BNC connector, and these are the cheaper option – although they are still perfect for basic home systems that are installed by a homeowner. They are called crimp BNC connectors due to the fact that they use a crimp mechanism to clasp onto the cable, essentially meaning that that the BNC connector squeezes the cable wires into the connector. This means that there can be issues with reliability after a while, as the BNC connector can work its way loose and therefore cause connectivity problems. Don’t be led to believe that crimp BNC connectors are a poor choice though. They will provide an excellent picture quality when installed and, as already stated, if there is a picture problem than simply terminate the cable again with a new BNC connector. The fact that they are very cheap to buy so replacing them won’t be a massive financial burden.
The other type of BNC connector is called a compression BNC connector, which is a far more reliable way of terminating CCTV leads. They are, however, also more expensive than the aforementioned crimp BNC connectors though, meaning that only people with advanced systems usually use them. They work by compressing the wires of the cable instead of simply crushing them, therefore meaning that they provide a much longer lasting hold and also have a tighter hold – therefore meaning that moisture rarely gets into the connection. They are great to use outside – especially in areas that are prone to inclement weather conditions – and will also provide a marginally better picture than a crimp BNC connector.
