Rep. Towns Convenes Panel to Investigate Social Welfare Policies

Rep. Towns is convening a group of experts to examine the impact of social welfare policies on African American families at a time when the economic downturn takes a disproportionate toll on the African American community.

Sept. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY), Chairman of the Social Work Caucus, is convening a panel of experts to explore the impact of social welfare policies on African American families. The panel discussion, entitled “Who Moved My Broom: Family Formation in the African American Community?” will review recent reports and historical trends to determine whether policies intended to support African American families have had unintended negative consequences. The experts will also seek to identify ways to combat the social and economic forces challenging the stability of the African American family, including a staggering unemployment rate of 15.7%, domestic violence and single-parent households.

Experts will devote considerable time to examining the Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Marriage Act as well as several other policies designed to strengthen families.
