Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County to Hold Lights On Afterschool Rally on Thursday, October 20th

7,500 Rallies Nationwide Aim to Make Afterschool Programs Available to All

Oct. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- WHAT: Lights On Afterschool is a nationwide event, headed by the Afterschool Alliance group, held at thousands of afterschool programs across the country to enlighten the community about the importance of afterschool programs.  Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County (BGCMC) is hosting a Lights On Afterschool event with a theme of ‘Going Green.’  Monterey Waste Management and The Hilton Bialek Habitat MEarth program will be present to teach Club Members and their parents about recycling and conservation.  Activities will include ‘calculating your carbon footprint,’ a read-aloud of the eco-friendly Dr. Seuss book ‘The Lorax’, and a healthy dinner of chicken salad.  Parents will be invited to write comments on a giant poster of a light bulb about the impact BGCMC has had on their children, which will then be used to decorate the Clubhouse.  Raffle prizes will be given during the event.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County (BGCMC) has played an integral role in the community for over 43 years. With Clubhouses in Seaside and Salinas, BGCMC provides youth between the ages of 6-18 an afterschool safe haven where they are mentored to achieve academic success, acquire healthy lifestyles, and develop good character and citizenship. Over 95% of the total budget comes from generous individuals, corporations and foundations. The Clubs are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. during summer and school breaks, and from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. when school is in session.
