Study Finds 11% of Dads Were Disappointed About Gender of First Child

Nov. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- A study from a newly launched unique gift website has found that of over 1,200 fathers in the UK, 11% felt disappointed with the sex of their first child. When asked to explain their reasons for the disappointment, the majority said it was because they wanted a boy to continue the family name.

In a bid to discover the attitudes fathers across Britain had when their first child was born, a newly launched unique baby gift website that allows parents to purchase a domain for their child’s name, http://www.YourBabyDomainName.com, has conducted a study of 1,204 dads across the UK, to investigate to the matter further.

The study, conducted by http://www.YourBabyDomainName.com, aimed to discover more about the feelings men have when they become a father for the very first time. Initially, the respondents were asked the multi-answer question ‘How did you feel when you were told the gender of your first child?’ to which two thirds, 66%, admitted they felt ‘ecstatic’.

In contrast, 11% of the fathers polled claimed that they felt ‘disappointed’ when they were told the sex of their first child. In a bid to investigate the matter further, these respondents were asked to explain their reasons for feeling disappointed about the sex of their first child.

According to the study by http://www.YourBabyDomainName.com, of the 11% who admitted to feeling disappointed about the sex of their first child, the majority, 52%, said that it was because they ‘wanted a boy’ as their first child rather than a girl, which they had.

When subsequently asked by http://www.YourBabyDomainName.com ‘Why did you want a boy first?’ a third, 31%, of these respondents said it was because they wanted to ‘continue their family name’.  A further 14% said it was because they felt they would have ‘bonded’ with a boy more so than with a girl.

The 11% of respondents who claimed to have felt disappointed with the sex of their first child were then asked ‘Do you still feel disappointed?’ to which 100% said ‘no’.

“We wanted to conduct this study in order to get a full understanding of all the emotions expecting and new parents feel. We were aware that most parents feel full of joy when expecting their first child, however we wanted to know if there are any other feelings than those we would all expect people to feel; specifically with the men who are about to become fathers.”

He continued,

“It does sound surprising that 11% of dads felt disappointment when they discovered the sex of their first baby, however none of these parents still feel disappointed. This feeling of disappointment seems to be a fleeting feeling that some fathers experienced.  To many men, and women, the family name is more than just a name and something that they want to be long continued into the future.”
