Anthony W. Conyers Promoted to Sergeant

Nov. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- Anthony W. Conyers, a seven year veteran, was promoted from patrolman to sergeant, the first African-American to do so in the Department.  He said it was an honor to advance in the Department.

“It is an honor and great personal achievement,” says Conyers.  

“First, yesterday was a great day of personal achievement for Sergeant Conyers and his family.  However, something even more significant occurred, that is “change,” says Sanders.

“Studies have shown that the majority of children will be of color.  Certainly, in less than 100 years, the growing number of Blacks, Hispanics and Asians will together comprise the new majority,” says Sanders.    

“Diversity, a concept that the Department has vigorously resisted well over 200 years, is slowly being peeled away for the betterment of the Department and the community it serves,” says Sanders.      

“With Sergeant Conyers’s promotion, the Department simultaneously began changing its model of modern policing,” says Sanders.  

“Traditional policing focuses on reducing crime by arresting the ‘bad guys,’ primarily through the utilization of the rapid response or 911 response model, that model is irreparably broken,” says Sanders.  “That model has resulted in major mistrust between the police and the community.”  

“Diversity, lends its self to a more flexible and arguably more efficient approach to modern policing,” says Sanders.  “I certainly look forward to continuing working in partnership with Sergeant Conyers and other interested clients to ensure diversity in police management is enthusiastically embraced.”
