Nov. 22, 2011 - PRLog -- In steel mill environments, where bearings are continuously exposed to high temperatures, selection of a right grease with exceptional load carrying capacity, oxidation stability, mechanical stability, water wash-out resistance, good pumpability and ability to handle high thermal stresses are very important.

Conventional high temperature greases containing thickeners like clay and polyurea with high operating temperatures, tend to thermally degrade at high temperatures leaving behind hydrocarbon residues. The ability of the grease to handle high temperatures combined with high loads and possible water ingress in a steel mill environment is critically important.

Critical bearing applications in steel mills requires the lubricant to provide apart from the basic functions of a grease like minimizing wear and provide sealing effect alongwith corrosion protection, an ability to continuously provide effective lubrication under high temperatures, thermal stresses, mechanical loads, water ingress, and other challenging conditions.

Grease is severely limited in its scope to provide the above for critical applications. To this end, Molykote, a global leader in the solid lubricant technology, has introduced lubricating grease pastes for continuous lubrication application at high temperatures. One of this product is Molykote® P40.

Molykote® P40 metal free lubricating pastes has excellent adhesive and anti-corrosive properties and can be used for all assembly jobs and continuous lubricating jobs which are exposed to high temperatures, corrosive environment and humidity. The good adhesion and high temperature property of Molykote® P 40 makes it an ideal long-term lubricant for critical applications as the paste does not go dry at high temperatures. Molykote® P 40 does not contain any metals or heavy metals, so no contact corrosion can occur. Molykote® P40 contains no toxic materials and presents no hazard for the users.

Molykote® P 40 is based on synthetic oil and provides paste or “wet” lubrication upto 230 degrees. The paste can handle temperatures as high as 1200 degree by providing dry lubrication. It combines the lubricating properties of grease with the load and temperature handling characteristics of pastes. The composition of the product includes bentonite as thickener to give it the non-melting characteristics and a synergistic mixture of solid lubricants additives to give it high load bearing and high temperature resistance.

Molykote® P 40 is classified as a grease paste due to its higher solid lubricant content exceeding 25% alongwith synthetic oil comprising 25% of the product by weight. The product provides lubrication with the oil upto 230 degree C and continues to lubricate upto 1200 degree C with its solid lubricant. It has excellent water washout resistance and can resists splash water as well making it idea for applications involving water-cooling mechanisms.
