OMEGA Watches Ambassador George Clooney Wins Palm Springs Award

Jan. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- OMEGA watches ambassador George Clooney has been recognised for his recent screen work at this weekend’s Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Clooney was awarded the prestigious Chairman’s Award at the ceremony on Saturday 7 January 2012, for his work in awards season contenders ‘The Ides of March’ and ‘The Descendants’.

Both films have seen the Hollywood star courting further critical acclaim, with the two pictures nominated for ‘Best Drama’ at the upcoming Golden Globes.

Next weekend’s awards ceremony, which will be hosted by last year’s controversial choice Ricky Gervais, also sees Clooney nominated for ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Screenplay’ for his behind-the-scenes involvement on ‘The Ides of March’.

Fresh from his success at Palm Springs, Clooney is hot favourite to be awarded ‘Best Actor’ at the Globes for his central role in ‘The Descendants’, a family drama helmed by Alexander Payne. With the Oscar nominations looming, Hollywood insiders are speculating that Clooney will also win his first ‘Best Actor’ Academy Award, after scooping ‘Best Supporting Actor’ in 2005 for ‘Syriana’ and being nominated previously in the ‘Best Actor’ category for the likes of ‘Michael Clayton’ and ‘Up in the Air’.

Clooney’s ‘Oceans Eleven’ co-star Brad Pitt was also honoured at the 23rd annual Palm Springs Awards Gala, picking up the Desert Palm Achievement Actor Award. Female stars who won on the night included Glenn Close, who accepted the Career Achievement Award, and Michelle Williams whose portrayal of blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe landed her the Desert Palm Achievement Actress Award.

Since he came to the public’s attention with his breakout role on television’s ‘ER’, Clooney’s on- and off-screen career has gone from strength to strength. In recent years, his talents as writer and director have become as noted as his string of celebrated acting roles.

Clooney, who has acted as ambassador for Swiss brand OMEGA watches since 2007, will next be seen in science-fiction thriller ‘Gravity’ in which he stars alongside Sandra Bullock. The actor has also announced plans to write, direct and star in an adaptation of Robert M. Edsel’s ‘The Monuments Men’, which tells the true story of a group of art experts selected by the US government to retrieve artwork stolen by the Nazis.
