East Lansing, MI – As melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, continues to rise, so do legislative drafts banning the use of commercial tanning beds by minors.  There is an increase of lawmakers nationwide who are looking to challenge current tanning laws in their state.  Current studies have shown an increase in the rates of skin cancer due to the frequency of indoor tanning.
In 2009, the World Health Organization deemed tanning beds a human carcinogen. Many feel that parents are misled to believe that tanning beds are safe.  Stricter laws banning tanning all together from minors would send a clear message that tanning is not safe.
Numerous states such as Utah, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island are looking to draft tanning legislation that would follow California’s lead, which outlawed tanning for minors in 2011.
