A Note from RENEE REY
I have always been intrigued by the mysteries of the metaphysical, human nature, the natural environment, and the relationship between the three. Over the... years, these subjects have provided a never-ending source of inspiration for my artwork. My aim is to create a world for my characters in which there is a visual conversation stimulating thoughts of spirituality, intellectual curiosity, association, and dichotomy. Some of the themes I explore include memory, personal and collective identity, social and political issues, feminism, sexuality, chaos, order, peace, isolation, struggle, and freedom.
As I create my drawings, paintings, and mixed media work, I walk the tightrope between realism and abstraction, combining light and shadow, texture and flatness, black, white and color. In conveying my vision, I spontaneously experiment, deconstruct and construct during the artistic process relishing in the energy and intimacy with the media, often using my fingers and hands to apply, manipulate and remove the charcoal, pastel, ink, and paint.
Beacons of influence range from the mystical, spiritual, theatrical, Jungian psychology, science, literature, my birthplace of Japan, my multi-cultural background of French, Armenian, Jewish, Christian heritage, and the many artists that inspire me including Lucian Freud, David Salle, Mark Rothko, Eric Fischl, Susanna Coffey, Robert Liberace, Larry Rivers, Nancy, Spero, John Singer Sargent, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
An award winning artist, I have exhibited my artwork nationally, and my work is collected worldwide. I have created custom pieces for Johnny Depp, Actor, Laurie Jennings, Channel 10 Anchor, Miami, FL, Bristol Myers Squibb and First Albany Corporation, New York, NY.
I have studied on the undergraduate and graduate level in drawing, painting, video, sculpture, computer graphics, art history and writing at Parsons School of Design, NY, NY, The University at Albany, Albany, NY, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy, NY, Art Students League, NY, NY and the Westchester Art Workshop, White Plains, NY. I have also studied informally with Susanna Coffey, at the Vermont Studio Center, and with Robert Liberace, at the SW Florida Atelier workshop for figurative and portrait painting.

PRIMARY MOTIVATION: Self-motivation. I am an artist. It is not just what I do. At 18 months I drew my first fish. As a pre-schooler I could sit for hours in my own world, drawing, cutting and pasting my own fantasy world of lively color and form. By 9 years old, I was not only enamored with my own heritage, but that of different people and cultures from around the world. From a young age, I was sensitive to the struggles and strengths of people, and the beauty and mystery of nature. As an artist, I have been blessed with a creative gift to express my thoughts and ideas visually.
PASSION FOR MY ARTISTIC DISCIPLINE: My first love is painting and drawing, although I do enjoy exploring other media to express my thoughts. I delight in the freedom of actively and intuitively pushing, pulling and manipulating charcoal, ink, and paint to express color, texture, form, and ideas.
Taking my artwork to new technical and conceptual levels is equally rewarding. Achieving new heights in my work comes from a natural drive and love for learning. A host of disciplines including art, literature, science, politics, and religion influence my artistic process.
