No More Need For Botox? Shocking New Study Has Proof!

Jan. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- New research published in a leading Dermatology journal has shown impressive evidence that a novel Botox gel may bode the end for painful Botox injections.

Whilst nowadays one must suffer in order to stay beautiful, perhaps in the future we will be able to both enjoy ourselves and appear fabulous!  The concept of a topically applied Botox gel is the "golden goose" for many pharma companies and for consumers alike.  Whoever develops a topical Botox gel will open up the market and reap huge financial dividends.

A new substance is being developed by a Californian based pharma company, Revance.  The company's mission statement is "to change the way that drugs are delivered.”  The company has developed a proprietary new technology known as TransMTS and this innovation allows drugs to pass through the skin and target specific tissues.  Revance is chasing after the pot of gold, namely the Botox market.  It has produced a substance, mysteriously code-named RT001 - the first Botox gel.
 
In their recent study, published on new year's day this year (2012), the researchers showed impressive results following treatment with the new substance.  Ninety volunteers were divided into two groups.  One group received a "fake" placebo and the other received the real Botox gel.

The treatment group showed significant improvement in their crow's feet wrinkles.  All test subjects initially had crow's feet graded as either moderate or severe.  To be considered a significant improvement the crow's feet had to improve at least two points - either from severe to fine, or from moderate to very fine.  Both a panel of experts as well as the patient had to grade the change for it to be counted.

Four weeks after the application of the Botox gel, 44% of the test subjects showed a "significant" improvement.  An astounding ninety percent showed "clinical" improvement, although not counted as significant by the strict criteria mentioned above.  In contrast, none of the subjects in the placebo group demonstrated any change at all.  Importantly, the results were statistically significant, with an almost non-existent chance of the results occurring randomly.  

The methodology of this investigation was extremely strict, being a "randomized, double-blind" study.  This means that both the doctors applying the Botox gel as well as the test subjects did not know whether they were receiving the real gel or the placebo.

The results are both impressive and encouraging, however, you shouldn't be racing down to your local pharmacy to grab the Botox gel.  There are still several more rounds of investigations required before the FDA will even consider granting registration.
