Muslims for Progressive Values invites the public to meet Dr. John Esposito and benefit from his scholarship as he speaks on “The Future of Islam in the 21st Century”. The talk will address the challenge of pluralism as a critical issue in the era of globalization. How is it impacting relations between Islam and Christianity, the Muslim world and the West, the lives and civil liberties of Muslims and inter-Muslim community affairs? Dr. John Esposito is a University Professor as well as Professor of Religion and International Affairs and of Islamic Studies at Georgetown University. Dr. Esposito is also the Founding Director of the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding in the Walsh School of Foreign Service. This event is a fundraiser for MPV, a 501(c) 3 organization working to build inclusive and welcoming congregations for all. We advocate for human rights, separation of religious and state authorities, freedom of expression, LGBTQ rights and women’s empowerment. In the short years since its inception, MPV has expanded to include chapters and affiliates in Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, Atlanta and Philadelphia as well as in Ottawa and Toronto, Canada. The interactive question and answer period will be moderated by Shirley Jahad, award winning journalist and Host at KPCC Public Radio. There will also be Rumi inspired artwork by Salma Arastu displayed for purchase. This event is co-sponsored by The Regas Institute and the Levantine Cultural Center.
